Product Overview

The EP-K187 is a helical-bevel gear reducer designed for industrial applications that require a
right-angle (90°) change of transmission direction. The drive combines
two stages of helical cylindrical gears with one stage of spiral bevel gears
in a compact three-stage arrangement, delivering precise directional change, wide ratio coverage,
and high efficiency in a single robust housing.

All gears are machined from 20CrMnTi low-carbon alloy steel, carburised and case-hardened to a
tooth-flank hardness of HRC 58–62, with contact fatigue strength σH ≥ 1,500 MPa and bending
fatigue strength σF ≥ 450 MPa. Ground tooth flanks achieve GB/T 10095.1 accuracy grade 6,
minimising noise and vibration and maximising transmission smoothness.

The EP-K187 covers an input power range of 0.55–200 kW and a maximum permitted
output torque of 52000 N·m. The standard gear ratio range is 5.36–250,
giving output speeds from 3.2–42,193 rpm with a 4P induction or servo motor.
Six mounting types — foot (K), B5-flange (KF), shaft-mounted hollow-bore (KA, KAF),
GK-housing hollow-bore (KAB), and torque-arm shaft-mounted (KAT) — cover virtually
every installation requirement. Standard ingress protection is IP55, with IP65 available on request.

The housing is precision-cast from HT250 high-strength grey cast iron and stress-relief aged
to ensure long-term dimensional stability. All rolling-element bearings are sourced from
premium manufacturers, designed to an L10h service life of ≥ 20,000 hours.
A balanced internal pressure system and high-integrity shaft seals prevent lubricant leakage
and exclude external contamination.

Mounting Types & Installation Positions

The EP-K187 is available in the following mounting configurations, each designed for a specific
installation requirement:

  • K187 (foot-mounted, solid output shaft)
  • KA187 (shaft-mounted, hollow output shaft)
  • K187SZ — input-shaft-only variant (no motor); accepts a customer-supplied coupling or pulley
  • K187R — combination of K187 and R-series helical reducer for very high overall ratios
  • KAT187 — KA type with integrated anti-rotation torque arm for rigid shaft-mount installations

All mounting types support six standard mounting positions (M1 to M6):

PositionDefinitionTypical Use
M1Motor horizontal, housing feet down (standard position)Suits the majority of horizontal drive applications
M2Motor horizontal, motor below housingFor upward-facing output shaft or suspended installation
M3Motor horizontal, housing feet upFor overhead platform mounting
M4Motor above housingSaves horizontal floor space in side-drive layouts
M5Motor horizontal, housing left side downFor drives mounted on a vertical face

Typical Industry Applications

IndustryTypical Application
Large Grinding MillsAuxiliary drives for ball mills and SAG mills in mining plants.
Cement Rotary KilnsMain slow-rotation drives for large rotary kilns.
Offshore DrillingDrawworks drives on offshore drilling platforms.
Large Ship PropulsionAuxiliary transmission drives for large vessel propulsion systems.

The 90° right-angle output shaft of the EP-K187 gives it a decisive advantage wherever
space is constrained or the transmission direction must change. From precision low-speed
processes to continuous heavy-duty industrial operations, the EP-K187
delivers a reliable and efficient drive solution across a wide range of sectors.

Case Study: Cement Rotary Kiln Auxiliary Drive

A 5,000 t/d cement kiln uses an EP-K187 as its auxiliary slow-rotation drive, providing 50,000 N·m output torque. When the main drive trips, the auxiliary drive keeps the kiln barrel turning slowly to prevent thermal distortion — protecting a capital asset valued at over USD 100 million.

Key Product Advantages

High Efficiency

Three-stage combined drive achieves 94–97% unit efficiency. Ground spiral bevel flanks minimise mesh losses and heat generation.

High Torque Density

Compact housing achieves an excellent torque-to-weight ratio. The K187 frame delivers up to 52000 N·m in a package weighing only 1,883 kg.

Long Service Life

L10h bearing life target ≥ 20,000 hours. Premium rolling bearings, engineered lubrication and robust sealing support a 15–20 year equipment life.

Versatile Installation

Foot, flange, shaft-mount and torque-arm types with M1–M6 positions cover virtually every spatial constraint and layout requirement.

Low Noise & Vibration

Grade 6 ground gears and precision-balanced spiral bevel stage keep sound pressure below 78 dB(A), suitable for noise-sensitive production environments.

Wide Ratio Range

Standard ratio series 5.36–250 covers a broad output speed range in one frame size, eliminating the need for separate gearbox families for different applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the EP-K187 the largest unit in the K series?
The K187 is the largest frame in the Ever Power standard K-series catalogue, with a rated output torque up to 52,000 N·m. For requirements beyond this limit, non-standard custom designs can be quoted.
What is the transmission efficiency of the K187?
A single K187 unit achieves 94–96% efficiency depending on ratio and load. A combined K187R (K187 in series with an R-series unit) gives approximately 88–92%. Although absolute power losses are large at this scale, the relative efficiency figures are consistent with smaller frame sizes.
How are the inspection and observation ports arranged on the K187?
The K187 housing lid has multiple threaded plugs that accept an industrial borescope for in-situ tooth-flank inspection without disassembly. The side wall carries an oil-level sight glass and temperature-sensor port. The drain plug is DN40; the breather plug at the top is recommended to be replaced with a combined breather and particulate filter.
How can online oil-condition monitoring be implemented for the K187?
Install an inline oil-quality sensor measuring viscosity, water content, and ferrous particle concentration. Interface the sensor with a predictive lubrication management (PLM) system to provide continuous condition monitoring. This approach typically reduces unplanned downtime by around 30% compared with time-based oil changes.
Is stock inventory held for the K187, and what is the typical lead time?
The K187 is a large customised product; standard stock is not maintained. Typical lead time from order acceptance is 15–25 working days, including production, assembly, testing, and packing. Priority scheduling for urgent orders is available — please contact the Ever Power sales team to confirm current availability.
